ICC information meeting in Montreal
October 29, 2004)

The ICC France Canada received its charter from President Jonathan Majiyagbe in Antibes Juan les Pins, on October 25, 2003. On Sunday October 24th, the 2 sections met for a general assembly in Quebec.

On October 29, some past governors, Canadian and American Rotarians met in Montreal for an information meeting organized by past governor Paul Beaulieu (Canada) and past governor Robert Héline (France). Guests included three R.I. Directors: John Eberhard, David Linett and Serge Gouteyron.

It was necessary to talk about the role of ICCs since they are less common in North America.

An ICC has an ambassadorial mission geared to strengthen exchanges between two or more countries. ICCs vary depending on participating countries.
For instance:

  • In Western Europe, ICCs promote cultural relations or work together in another country.
  • In Africa, ICCs deal mainly with educational and humanitarian activities they initiate or carry out with the support of clubs and districts.
    There is solidarity without interference.
  • In Central and Eastern Europe. In new countries such as Russia and others, ICCs are directly involved in extension as well as training for these new young Rotarians.
  • In the Middle East, ICCs are working towards peace in the spirit of the first ICC created in Strasbourg in 1950 whose goal was to renew ties between France and Germany, interrupted by two world wars.

ICCs are tools for International Service that clubs and districts can use at the same level as sister clubs, Friendship Exchanges or R.I. Fellowships.
ICCs are more efficient than sister clubs for instance in establishing and maintaining relations when distances between countries are great.

In conclusion to our meeting, it was decided by those present to go ahead with the ICC structure in view of the opportunities offered by this concept.
