Rotary International President Jonathan Majiyagbe's Presidential Celebration of Intercountry Committees to promote peace and world understanding was a spectacular success.

Attendance

The event hosted 819 participants including 200 spouses from some 30 countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Canada, the United States and China.

Following opening statements from Deputy Mayor Jean Léonetti, Governors Lucien Elégant and Bernard Bonnes and remarks from President Jonathan Majiyagbe and RI Director Gennaro Cardinale, 21 speakers sat on a panel to discuss various Intercountry Committee projects

Charter Presentation

This was a very special moment. Three charters were presented by the RI President and National Coordinator Serge Gouteyron: France/Togo, France/Canada (Quebec Section) and France/China.

Rotary World Peace Scholars 

Prior to the round tables, participants were treated to statements from scholars Karla Berg and David Oliveira de Souza from the Rotary Center for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution at Science Po

Round Table Two - How to Promote Intercountry Committees

  • 1. Provide governors-elect with information at the International Assembly in Anaheim to pass along at the PETS and the District Assembly
  • 2. Appoint a District ICC Chair
  • 3. Invite intercountry committees to district conferences with twin club
  • 4. Include contact information for the Chairman of the ICC Executive Council and National Coordinators in the Official Directory
  • 5. With the Board's support, propose a resolution at the Council on Legislation to expand ICCs to all continents (Dr. Gennaro Cardinale). .

District 1730 Peace Award Presentation

Governor Lucien Elégant presented the award to Mrs. Cécile Farion. All told, Mrs. Farion has raised 256 children with Down Syndrome (currently caring for 23) and has adopted 13 children.

Closing

Just before ceding the floor to President Jonathan Majiyagbe, Planning Committee Chairman Marcel Stéfanski thanked all those who helped organize the event (praising in particular the governor team: Lucien Elégant and Bernard Bonnes and director of protocol Ms. Viviane Paseggi Gibert).

In addition, Mr. Elegant honored the memory of the late Ade Majiyagbe paying his respects and bringing the day to a close with Joseph Haydn's Farewell Symphony.

A Delightful Reception Deputy Mayor Dr. Jean Léonetti held a special reception for 200 (International Rotary dignitaries) on Friday 24 October 2003.

Media Coverage

  • 1,000 invitations-programs were sent to all club presidents in Zone 11 and Zones 10-18.
  • 1,200 promotional leaflets in two languages were printed and distributed. ·
  • The August issue of Le Rotarien was devoted to promoting Intercountry Committees. 35,000 issues were printed and editor Christophe Courjon distributed 1,000 at the celebration. ·
  • Full regional media coverage throughout the three days of the celebration-both during and after. ·
  • 3,000 advertising inserts in 4 regional newspapers (Alpes Maritimes - Bouches du Rhône - Corse et Var) were purchased. Included 4 pages of information on Rotary, Intercountry Committees, the Presidential Celebration, President Jonathan Majiyagbe and excerpts from celebration speeches.

En conclusion
  • In Conclusion · President Majiyagbe's remarks were very complimentary of the conference. ·
  • The President of the ICC Executive Council (Onder Bilginer) presented a commemorative plaque in recognition of the event to all members of the Planning Committee and dignitaries in attendance. ·
  • With the help of the French government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, special authorization was granted for a delegation including two governors (Lucien Elégant, Bernard Bonnes), local presidential aid Claude Powilewicz, media chair Louis Saltorocchi, Ms. Durivaux Governor of Innerwheel, ICC Executive Council President Onder Bilginer and Chairman Marcel Stéfanski to meet President Jonathan Majiyagbe at the airline gate under the supervision of Border Patrol Commander Léandrit.
  • The president was then taken to a VIP lounge in the airport where a folk music group from Provence awaited him.
  • An honor guard greeted the president at the Ambassadeur Hotel. · We were also honored to welcome Presidential Aid Mark Daniel Maloney and his wife, Gay. ·
  • A Powerpoint presentation prepared by Robert Vandenbussche and Jean Monternier covered the celebration. ·
  • A DVD is being produced. · A videocassette is also being prepared. ·
  • Serge Gouteyron , National Coordinator of intercountry committees in France, convened the 65 chairmen or representatives of intercountry committees in the afternoon on October 24th.
