of national event discuss future of Rotaract in France Plenary and brainstorming sessions on the Rotary Centennial celebrations, the achievements and future of Rotaract, and interclub partnerships were among the activities that preoccupied participants at the 35th Rotaract Convention France, 15-17 October. Held in the charming Alsatian city of Colmar, the event attracted 150 delegates and guests from France and abroad. Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, and the United States were represented. "Rotaract clubs are the future of Rotary, and their members are among the more dynamic of the great Rotary family," District 1680 Governor Lucien Dambrin, of the host district, said in a welcome address. "They are the breeding ground for tomorrow's Rotarians." Convention chair Laurent Michon, of the Rotaract Club of Lyon International, and host committee chair Nicolas Koenig, of the Rotaract Club of Colmar, also welcomed participants to the meeting. In addition to introducing "Rêve et Cinema" ("Dreams and the Movies"), a national centennial project that will sponsor a movie preview in 200 theaters across France on 8 April 2005, Michon encouraged Rotaract clubs to carry out local centennial projects and celebrate Rotary's 100th birthday with their sponsor clubs. Representing the RI president, RI Director Serge Gouteyron delivered a keynote address on the evolution of Rotary since 1905. "Rotary has open roads that lead to peace," he told participants. "Peace on earth but also within ourselves, in our community, and in our clubs." Gouteyron explained how Rotary's international and humanitarian character is reflected in the associations, partnerships, and joint projects that it has forged with organizations such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe. Underscoring the importance of invigorating Rotaract with an infusion of new blood, he commended Rotaract France's three-year plan aimed at doubling Rotaract membership in the country. "I would like to insist on this point, that membership development is particularly important for the future of the Rotaract movement in France," he said. Hélène Genin, Rotaract France's national coordinator, introduced a CD-ROM designed to assist Rotaract club presidents in administrative tasks. She also highlighted the 2004-05 Rotaract France national project, a highway safety initiative aimed largely at preventing drunk driving. "[Drunk driving] is a big issue in France, but it is also a personal issue for French Rotaractors. The husband of a member of the Rotaract Club of Lyon was killed last June by a drunk driver," explains Cyril Noirtin, RI representative to UNESCO and a member of the Rotary Club of Paris Agora. "Rotaract clubs of France will organize various events this year to promote road safety and warn of the dangers of drunk driving." A former Rotaract France chair, Noirtin made a keynote address on the status of polio eradication at the convention. "I thank Rotaractors in France for their contribution to the program over the years," he said. "We are determined to do whatever it takes to get the job done." Other highlights of the meeting included a gala dinner and regional tour. At the dinner, officials from Coordination Nationale Rotaract France (executive body of Rotaract France) presented awards to the Rotaract clubs of Arras, Nantes, and Paris for outstanding projects that enhanced Rotaract communication. |
